PHILOSOPHY

 

CORE PHILOSOPHY

The term of “Ashtanga Yoga” is a general concept that can be used for all kinds of classical yoga complying with the traditional technique, as given, formatted and encoded by Patanjali in the texts of Yoga Sutras. Patanjali is the father of Yoga. Thanks to him the art of Yoga took shape in a written form.

The author’s powerful vision allowed the birth of this text, that with reason and precision describes the body, the ego, the breathing, the consciousness and the ways of their exercise.

 

Yoga is the science for the soul’s liberation, leading consciousness, body and mind in a state of completeness.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali consists of 196 “forms” divided into 4 chapters.

The textbook is like a necklace (mala) and his beads are the forms.

It is difficult sometimes to directly understand their philosophical form. Only with the experience of practice can we walk through the path of their spirit and approach them with consciousness.

For Patanjali, Yoga is described from the philosophical point of observation (darshana) ,and his perspective creates, 8 "limbs"

 

The practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is an ancient yoga system taught by the wise Vamana in his book “Yoga Korunta”. This document was given to Shri T. Krishamacharya in the early 1900 by his teacher RamaMohan Br. and then was passed to Pattabhi Jois during his internship with Krishamacharya that started in 1927.

The elements that mainly characterize yoga practice according to Pattabhi Jois are:

  • Vinyasa, motion system in synchronization with the breathing

There is one breath for every move. For example there are 9 vinyasas in Suryanamaskar. So, all the asanas (positions) match with a specific number of breaths and movements (vinyasas). The purpose of vinyasa is to strengthen the “inner fire” and make the purifying process easier at all levels (blood, joints, feelings, thoughts). The blood temperature goes up and helps every mental “poison”, physical illness and toxin to be removed through sweating. Sweating is an essential derivative for vinyasa since the purifying process of the “body” is accomplished through it.

Once the body is purified, we can proceed to the nervous system and the sensory organs that are portals responsible for energy loss. Since their function is constantly directed to the “outdoors”, the Body indulges in laziness and unconsciousness. All this, however, can be controlled with determination and constant practice. Vinyasa creates the basis to control the “losses”.

  • Tristhana, three points of attention at the time of action (any action), posture (asana), breathing system (vinyasa), focus of the eyes (dristhi) that match with the three levels of purification, body, nervous system and mind. Always exercised in relation to one another.

Other important elements of the exercise are the energy locks (mula and uddiyana bandha) that “seal” the energy, give strength, a sense of weight loss and health in the body. They also help to keep the fire strong so that asanas can express their healing capacity.

 

 

The six poisons

A vital element of the internal purification to which Pattabhi Jois is refered, is the one that connects the six poisons that surround the spiritual heart of man.

The six poisons that cover the light of the heart is, desire, anger, delusion, greed, jealousy and laziness. When practice is kept with dedication and diligence for a long time, the “temperature” that is born from the practice, burns the poisons and the Light of our inner nature is released.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga originated under the supervision of Sri Pattabhi Jois (http://kpjayi.org/) and taught even today in exactly the same way in Mysore in southern India.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga allows:

  • the correct form and the harmonization of the blood circulation which is fluidized as the body temperature rises,
  • the strengthening of immune system,
  • the stimulation of the heartbeat due to sweating, toxin’s excretion and body’s deep purification
  • the enhancement mental concentration during and after practice,
  • the awareness of the breathing rate (70% of the energy we receive every day is from breathing and not eating!),
  • relaxation, deep mental process and confidence (positive faith in ourselves)

GURUS / GENEALOGY

 

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya

 * Yogi, healer, linguist, scholar of the Vedas (ancient Indian texts), researcher, writer, a legend. Born in 1888! In a distant Indian village T.. Krishnamacharya who lived over 100 years was one of the greatest yogis of the modern age. If Yoga is today, an integral part of everyday life, for millions of people around the world, is greatly due to his radical efforts of reviving yoga in the early 20th century. And as part of preserving the ancient wisdom and reviving lost teachings, Krishnamacharya was also a revolutionary innovator who developed and adjusted the Yogic practices that offer health, mental clarity and growth in every man of modern times.

 

Pattabhi Jois

* Yogacharaya (one who possesses the knowledge of yoga, the teacher) Shri K. Pattabhi Jois was born under the full moon (Gurupurnima) in July 1915, in a small village (Kowshika) 150 km from Mysore, in the southern state Kapralaka India. His father was an astrologer and priest in a village of 70 families and Guruji, the middle of nine children.

From the age of five, like most children of the Brahmans (priests of India) started studying the sacred texts (Vedas).
At 12 he attended a yoga demonstration. Thrilled by his new "discovery" woke up early the next morning to meet the impressive yogi he had seen, Sri T. Krishnamacharya.

O Krishnamacharya accepted him as a student for two years and then he left the village, leaving the young Pattabhi to continue his education in Mysore, in Sanskrit school, since he left his home with two rupees in his pocket, at the age of 14.

In 1932, at university, h attended another yoga demonstration noting with pleasure that the yogi on the scene was his first teacher. Starting his study again, in 1937 he finally took charge of the yoga section in the University of Sanskrit (despite his objections that he wanted to remain as a student) under the encouragement of the Maharaja of the region (ShriKrishnaRajendraWadeyar) and taught there until his retirement in 1973.

In 1948, he founded Asthanga Yoga Research Institute in his small house of two rooms. Many doctors and therapists send their patients there to receive help in the treatment of diabetes, heart problems, blood pressure and other diseases.

In 1964, Guruji added an extension of the exercise room (shala) that housed 12 students and a relaxation room above.

There he also taught the foreign origin Van Lysbeth, who in his book “Pranayama” first presented in western public a photo of Pattabhi Jois and Asthanga Yoga.

The next year, Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and his method became known worldwide. Thousands of people traveled to Mysore to meet him and work out under his supervision in the new hall that was officially opened in 2002 after several days of rituals and prayers (pujas).

In 2008, after 70 years of teaching, Guruj was retired. And on May 18th, 2009, at the age of 93 he passed into eternity. All his teaching was a constant effort to inspire the students’ dedication and integrity, representing in his entire life the Yogi model that in the same time supports a family.

Due to the virtue of enthusiasm and faith in practice, that he learned from his teacher, Krishnamacharya, this teaching is alive today. And due to his daily dedication in teaching yoga, his legend will also stay alive.    

Manju Jois

Guru of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Manju Jois, is the eldest son of Sri K Pattabhi Jois.

Recognized worldwide as the foremost authority on the practice of Ashtanga, was born in November 16th, 1944.
At the age of seven, Manju got up early every morning by his father to attend the courses that would change his life and the lives of all those who will apprentice with him in the coming years.
He began teaching at the age of 15 with his father and continued from then until today.

His mother, Savarti Jois was an adorable wife and mother and a specialist in Indian cuisine. Always had an encouraging word to say to every student of Pattabhi Jois , Indian or Western. Her presence counted as much as the teacher’s. Also well trained in Sanskrit, she often corrected his mistakes or reminded him a forgotten verse. Her loss in 1997 was tragic for the family and the society of Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore.

O Manju is now devoted to his wife Nancy and their young daughter Sathu born in 2002.

For 47 years, Manju taught the method of Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore and now traveling across the globe imparts knowledge received from his father.

He includes breathing exercises and Vedic chants in his classes, approaching the practice of Ashtanga according to the ancient method.

He hopes to contribute to the comprehension of the method and the concentration and inspiration of students, by bringing many advantages of practice in their lives. He is dedicated in teaching and practicing leading everyone to “unify with oneself”.

 

Derek Ireland

Derek was born in Brighton, England in 1949 and in his youth was excellent in sports and music. He started yoga in the 70s and studied for six years with Robert Mosses in Sirananda Ashram, Bahamas where he initially came in touch with Asthanga Vinyasa Yoga Method.

He later found himself in NY practicing with Leslie Kaminoff, Norman Allen and Tridham Das, the ground breaking group of teachers that taught the method in the west.

In the mid 80's he visited Mysore and studied with the Guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois for many years.

He established the first Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Center in Europe, in the south of Crete in 1989 where he trained some of the most famous masters of Ashtanga today.

At the same time, he traveled to Europe, offering workshops and established a specific method of teaching. He laid the foundations of a modern teaching system based on verbal adjustments that were appreciated and integrated into the Western community.

Moreover, he set Yoga Teacher’s career path standards as he was the perfect example for his students that now run schools around the world.

The charismatic presence of Derek, continues to be a source of inspiration for both yoga teachers and for enthusiastic interns around the world that are proud to be part of Genealogy of Sri Pattabhi Jois.

 

Kristina Karitinou

Kristina is an accredited teacher of Ashtanga Yoga and teaches the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois since 1991.
She was certified as a teacher of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga by Derek Ireland and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in 2002, and by Manju Jois in 2012, she has also done intensive practice with Sharath Jois. She teaches the First, Second and Third series of Asthanga Yoga and offers classes, workshops and retreats throughout the year in Greece, Europe and Asia.

Christina is very pleased to work with Manju Pattabhi Jois’s teachers and host their training in Crete.

Christina’s work follows the teachings and techniques of Derek Ireland who had the good fortune to be among the first students of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and is considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in his time.

 

 KUNDALINI YOGA TEACHER

Yogi Bhajan

Harbhajan Sing Yogi

Born on August 26, 1929 and was to become a spiritual leader. He was the first man who made widely known Kundalini Yoga system in the Western world starting with America in the 60s.

Student of Sant Hazara Singh, Swami Dev Murti and Dhirendra Brahmachari. He was the spiritual director of 3HO organization (Healthy Happy Holy) in more than 35 countries, and he had 300 training centers under his supervision.

In 1971 he will be anointed as the CEO of Sikh Dharma of the Western Hemisphere by the Committee Shiromani Purdwara Parbandhak, of the Ministry of Sikhs in the West.

Yogi Bhajan was born in the region of Punjab (British India), his father Dr Kartar Singht Puri served as a royal doctor in the region. His mother was called Harkrishan Kaur.

From a very wealthy family, he received education in a Catholic school directed by nuns and married in Delhi to 1954 to Inderjit Kaur Uppal.

Passing several years under the strict tutelage and training of Sant Hazara Singh he became a teacher at the age of 16. He graduated with a master's degree in economics in 1951 and later from the University of Humanities at San Francisco with a Ph.D. in communications psychologywith his dissertation "Contact: Liberation or Condemnation."

He integrated a lifetime of practice and studying the yogic science while traveling across India with visits to many ashram (spiritual knowledge schoolsand through the 60s he worked as a teacher in Vishwayatan Ashram in New Delhiunder the direction the Dhirendra Brahmachari. This school was often visited by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi, and diplomats from foreign embassies in the city.

Yogi Bhajan emigrated to Canada in 1968where he founded his own school in three months and many classes in Cristian organizations YMCA.

In 1968, going to visit a friend in Los Angeles he ended up staying there to share his knowledge of Kundalini Yoga with the community of Hippies in California and New Mexico.

He died in October, 6th 2004, in his home at the age of 75.

The state of New Mexico, honored him by giving his name on a highway, Yogi Bhajan Memorial Highway and kept the state flags half-mast for two days after his death, on October 7th and 8th, writing his part in the history of the United State of America.

Also established October 23rd as the memorial day of Yogi Bhajan.

 

MYSORE

 

Mysore Style Practice

The practice that is called Mysore or personal practice (Self-practice)
It's the best way to learn Ashtanga yoga as you turn your attention "inward" and "on central" and not to any external factor (aka, teacher)
It gives you independence and strengthens your memory, since you memorize the series, and over time helps to establish a daily practice.

For Mysore system it is good for you to commit yourself to practice for at least 3 times a week in order to reflect the method in your body and build its growth day by day.

The practice of Yoga is much like gardening. To grow the plant right we must give daily love and attention.

Solid foundation in basic "procedures", (focus-drishtis, locks-bandhas, breathing), are the roots that give strength and grace to practice.
Take care of your body as you would with a friend, with respect, and be prepared for everything, "hearkening" to experience.

For the new and determined students our school is recommending a 5 week introductory intensive course.The first thing you notice in a Mysore class is that it looks a bit chaotic. Each student practices in his own time and space and the nothing such as the uniformity of a guided lesson. Wondering what is going on?
If you just stand and look closely you will see that this emerges a standard motion pattern. Students follow the series with accuracy and everyone is on the same path. One is ahead, another behind.
Silence is impressive!
Sometimes the teacher would whisper something to a student, but the dominant sound is the collective breath.
These changes are often so subtle that are hardly recognized by those who are not familiar.

Mysore Karnataka


Mysore is a city in southern India where Ashtanga yoga is taught by SriK. PattabhiJois, starting in 1930. In Asthanga Yoga’s traditional form students learn positions in a predefined order using a technique that links the breath with movement (vinyasa). Vinyasa connects positions, keeping the rhythm, in dancing with the breathing.

Given positions

 

Each student practices given positions according to his ability.

Each position is designed to prepare the next, and so, beginners have less practice time than more experienced students.

Since they gain power, strength, flexibility and concentration they are moving along and their teacher "gives" them the next positions.

The word "give" is a tradition in teaching practice in India, where yoga is the process of passing the spiritual knowledge from teacher to student.

In the West people is accustomed to learn many asanas at once (as in most yoga classes), and thus without knowing the technique to increase the probability of injuries. The advantage of Mysore classes is that it fits all since everyone moves at their own pace and within its capabilities.

Why do I need a teacher?

If you want to go from Athens to Vitina, and you don’t have a map, you'd obviously find your way sometime.
But if you wanted to be certain you would maybe ask someone for instructions who has been there before. You may also want a guide for the entire route in order to save time. In case of many people telling you that they have been in Vitina you might need to trust the person to guide you to the right destination.

By the teacher...


When you practice Mysore is important to wait for the teacher to "give" you a new position.
This act of waiting gives your teacher the opportunity to teach you the right position and to "adjust" you to it.
This waiting is also an opportunity to express your respect for the teacher and practice, and forms a part in a basic function that is to learn to "listen".
The more you practice this process the more you realize that the knowledge of yoga is a gift from your teacher, and this doesn’t mean that you are bound to him. The first and basic principle of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is an effort to develop your personal freedom.
Yoga is a gift to mankind by Patanjali.

Regarding the commitment to practice....


The method is intended to become an everyday practice and students are encouraged to keep a frequency of 3 classes a week at least. Traditionally we practice every day except Saturdays and the full moon and new moon phases.
It's a little difficult to initially commit to a daily practice and often takes 1-2 years for this to happen.
So don’t get discouraged if you at first exercise two times a week.

Our school encourages a steady practice and in some cases it is combined with 2-3 times practice at home.

 

You must commit to one kind of yoga practice?


There are various yoga practices and in the beginning it is helpful to try different kinds.
However, after this first period of testing is good to let go of the "variations" of the mind, and move deeper into ourselves.
As we pick one teacher to begin, we pick a practice too.
"Until one is committed there is hesitation, backslide and inefficiency."
Once committed Providence moves towards me.

The teacher who will teach the first series is important because he will define the foundations of our change.

If you have a diagram of the Ashtanga Yoga practice we advise you to read at home rather than bring it to class.
Over time you will memorize the flow of the positions in class under the guidance of your teacher.

How often-Relaxation....


For women is recommended to stop the practice in the first 2-3 days of the menstrual cycle (ladies holiday).
The practice is six days a week, leaving one day of rest. The outcome is accelerated when practicing three times a week at least. If your schedule will allow, and you can add more days.

 

Is Yoga a form of physical exercise?


Yoga is a complete form of conscious physical exercise and while an important aspect of its result is a good physical condition it is not the only benefit you will derive from the practice.

Why do Yoga?


The reasons for someone to start doing yoga vary. Whatever the reason that brings me to my mattress, physical exercise, treatment of chronic injuries or inner peace, practice can cover me.
It is a comprehensive technique for the body and mind, and has now proven through countless scientific studies that can be tailing off levels of stress and increase your sense of health and status of happiness.
If you are interested in working with the quality of your mind, a regular practice in yoga is a great place to work out in mental clarity.
Synchronizing with breathing, body and thought, a devoted practitioner can have the experience of a long and deep transformation.

I'm not flexible. Can I do Yoga?


We welcome all types of bodies.
Yoga is a physical exercise that will improve your flexibility over time. No need to be flexible when you start, but as you progress you will find that the range of your movement is increased.
Over time, frequent and diligent practice will establish a balance between strength and flexibility.

Is the School open on days of full moon and new moon?


Yes, the school is open on days of Full Moon and New Moon. Traditionally, we don’t do Mysore practice on these days. But except for Mysore classes that follow a program of meditation (chanting) there are other classes that you attend.

I’ve learned Ashtanga Yoga in a different way. Do I have to change what I have learned?


Yes. One of School’s objectives is to maintain traditional practice and authenticity. Wisely or not some teachers have modified Ashtanga practice.
Many have no contact with the genealogy of SriK. Pattabhi Jois and so they teach out of tradition.

 

Why"braked" in practice?

For beginners to suddenly stop thinking in practice is just part of the learning process.
The positions are "given" one by one and usually need time to assimilate.


New positions are given only when the student has shown the ability to keep pace in the previous ones.
In Ashtanga vinyasa yoga, ability means both to maintain proper internal power lock (Bandhas), the focus of gaze (Drishti) and breathing (Ujjayi breath) rather than to be "tucked" into a specific position.


For capable students, being asked to stop before completing the practice they usually do, can occur for the following reasons:
The student does not practice for a long time, or has learned the wrong way and have to start again gradually


The student is injured and advised to move more slowly in the process to heal trauma


The student has not demonstrated full capability in process (concentration, breathing band) and he may be risking injury by going much further than the current capabilities can support. In which case it is essential for his emotional or physical well-being to realize.

The student is playing with his capabilities, rejecting his weaknesses and so he has to deal with this polarity more than to add new positions.


The student has arrived later in class and cannot complete practice at the time of expiry.

What do we do for pains and injuries that already exist?

Although we may feel griped or tired after our practice for quite a long time, there is no need to push ourselves and our bodies too. This is the source of all injuries in Ashtanga Yoga practice, and comes purely from our own stubbornness and not from practice.

Every day we command our bodies to do things - activities, anxiety, stress, pressure. This behavioral pattern is the one we project in our practice. Over time, the practice itself will show us that we are pushing too much and this will be an opportunity for us to change this behavior.

In case of injury  from an old fact, there are many alternative modifications that our teacher can tell us.
One of the many positive results when we work out a Yoga system is the cure.
Making room for practice in our daily lives we create balance in the overall shape of our lives and invite healing.

What do we do when griped or tired?

It is only natural when you start any form of physical exercise – in the begging (and for a long time … that depends)- practice is a form of physical exercise.

It is best for you to do what your ability allows you to do rather than disturb the flow with excessive effort. Gradually your body will adapt to practice and not the opposite.

Through experience we learn to distinguish and we learn how to exercise the limits of our abilities, gaining the most benefit without crashing our bodies and our minds.

 

Maria Anoop Kaur Mutilinaiou

She was born in Athens in the mid 60’s.

Maria received her basic training from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports science and then from GRAFTS , a school of special arts and continued with the profession of an aerobics instructor and personal trainer for 15 years taking part in the National Aerobic Championship (NAC) as an athlete.

She worked in major gyms in Attica enriching her knowledge on human physiology and maintaining the profile of the popular trainer with appearances in many television shows and participations in many fitness events until a serious injury gave an end to this route.

She decides for her own therapy to begin the practice of Ashtanga First Series with Kristina Karitinou without having any kind of experience in any kind of yoga and after constant prohibitions of the doctors that treated her and recommended surgery.

The first practice was a nightmare of fears and the beginning of a long period of deep catharsis that lasted three years.

In 2005 she completed her first teacher training with Christina, and other trainings followed in 2008. Maria began teaching yoga in the school she founded (YogaforthePeopleAthensShala) and decided to completely change her life and be devoted entirely to the teaching, studying and practice of yoga.

It was in 2010 that Maria met Manjujois. With him Maria initially completed 500 hours intensive teacher training.

Until now she has been trained for more than 2000 hours in the First and Second Series and continues her practice. In 2011 she began KundaliniYoga teachers’ training under the auspices of GuruRamDasAshramkai and Marina Amar Dev Ktisti. An incredibly interesting experience that completely changed her perspective of the systems of yoga and she successfully took the Instructor certification from KRI (KundaliniResearchInstitute) of YogiBhajan.

In 2012 Manju authorized her to teach the First Series declaring her teacher in the tradition of SriPattabhiJois.

Maria lives and practices in Athens along with her ​​daughter Dimitra, guiding those who want, to the path of yoga and exchanging knowledge and experience. Since the 4th of May, 2014 she retains the position of President of the Association of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in Greece.

 

THE CIRCLE – KUNDALINI YOGA

Internal practice

The Sanskrit term Vini-yoga (vi-ni-yoga) indicates the flow of a yoga lesson, based on diversity, adaptation and appropriate method, providing the means to emerge the best of the student.

Requires teacher’s awareness of the student’s physical state and focus to his personal potential and goals, as well as the student’s sensitivity and understanding of the vibrations of the vital action, and the means that the practice of personal development features.

This combination gives both the opportunity to work, focus and activate the process of transformation and awareness in a circle shape. The circle is a closed figure with no edges with continuous flow (district) center (target) and space (mind + heart).

Dedicated to the awakening of Kundalini energy, is a practice of unfolding our human side on different levels.
Drawing inspiration from the consolidation of various "internal techniques' (asanas, pranayamas, mundras, bandhas, kriyas) and leading to a" round dance "sensitizes the energy field and prepares the student to communicate with upper self. (Internal practices, experience necessary).

All is correct as long as is serves a person’s attitude for a conscious form of life and to bring about change. This in fact is the main objective of practice apart from the inevitable, improving in physical levels (body, breathing, health). The majority of yoga types operate under the umbrella of Hatha Yoga.

Our school offers courses for all levels, covering the needs of both beginners starting to exercise without any past experience and very advanced and dedicated practitioners.

For those who are now    beginning Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and want to develop their practice in Mysore form (selfpractice). THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE-DIMITRIS KOKKONAS

Thai Massage is an ancient healing art. Its origin lies in India, a therapeutic system traces are 3000 years back and has common roots with Yoga. Folk legends attribute the creation of this healing art in an Indian physician and contemporary of Buddha but also Hippocrates under the name of Tzivaka Kumar Baka.

Between 2o and 3rd century BC, Buddhist monks, including members of the caste of Physicians, moved from India, arrived in Siam (present Thailand) and from there spread to the rest of Asia. Thai Massage based on (common on Eastern philosophies) perception that life at its most basic level is energy (this is called "prana" in Sanskrit and "chi" in Chinese). First Practice

What you need to know about yoga and your practice in Yoga for the People Athens Shala.

  • Come to class with light clothing suitable for indoors physical If it is winter make sure that you can remove them when you warm up and add them when needed.
  • Take a quick shower before class and make sure that your equipment (mattress, towels) are clean. (You can also use school’s showers).
  •    Please avoid wearing the following: jewelry, watches, perfumes, creams and body oils.
  • It is not recommended to use towels during the course. When you start the practice you may sweat much more than you are accustomed. Do not avoid sweat since it is part in the natural and mental body. You can bring your towel the secretariat . Over time you will perspire less as the body will experience its equilibrium state.
  • Do not get discouraged if you feel tired and run into difficulties. The aim is not exogenous perfection. Observe the movements without criticism, ask yourself how you feel and smile .
  • Drink water before practice, not during, and half an hour after practic if it is a cold drink.
  • If you have questions stand in front of the mattress and the teacher will come to guide you.
  • The teacher is there to help you, to remind you of the poses and you get to new. If he/she is busy, please wait patiently.
  • No need to stretch before practice. Everything you need is within your practice.
  • Please wait after practice to communicate with others. When you're in class try to be silent and to concentrate on your practice.
  • No need to leave your mattress for some positions, the whole practice can be done .

ASTHANGA – HATHA

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is the science of releasing the soul and has the technology that is needed to lead the body, consciousness and heart in a state of cooperation and completeness.

Ashtanga Yoga in Sanskrit means the Yoga of the 8 limbs as described by Patanjali in the text of the Yoga Sutras.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the system of practice described by the wise Vamana in the ancient manuscript of Yoga Korunta.

It contains lists from different groups of asanas (positions), as well as higher teaching techniques and philosophy. The text was delivered in early 1900 in S.T.Krishnamacharia from the Master of Rama Mohan Br and later in S.Pattabhi Jois who studied with him in 1927. Pattabhi Jois taught Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in his school (http://kpjayi.org/) in Mysore, district of Karnataka in India since 1948 and made the system world famous.

These 8 inseparable limbs of Ashtanga’s boby are:

Characteristics of A.V.Y. is Vinyasa (describes the motion system in sync with breathing), and Tristhana that indicates the three points of attention in every action: the pose (asana,) breath (vinyasa), and the focus of gaze (drishti). All three are important as they activate purification of the body,the nervous system and mind.

The practice of Ashtanga charms through its power and elegance and intrigues through its ancient tradition. Every move, every breath, every position, practiced for thousands of years just like today. Being part of a tradition that has passed from generation to generation is a magical state.

What is the difference between Ashtanga and the otherpracticesof yoga?

The Ashtanga course is called Mysore. Practice and teaching style differs from most types of yoga because:

  • It is structured in series posts in which we practice every day.
  • We build our practice gradually with time
  • teacher student relationship is very important
  • students are exercised with a specific teacher
  • relates more to challenge ourselves to change and less production and promotion of what we are used to
  • students follow their own pace and are encouraged to persist in some posts if there is evidence that these are therapeutic

Why choose Ashtanga practice instead of others?

Following the course once is enough to fall in love with it. Initially I will choose A.V.Y. practice because I will find challenging its continuous flow, the dynamic posts, temperature that is developed based on the breathing technique, very similar to aerobic exercise (and is aerobic exercise).

It can easily replace to a physical level, any other kind of physical exercise and overrides any need for drastic change in the image of my body, not to mention the excellent oxygen uptake and the sculpting of each point in the body, close to the perfect natural Warrior model (it is said that the practice began to be exercised by warriors).

The truth is that this body "sculpting" will also start happening in my consciousness, feeling and in my behavior ... not with the same active pace... After some time, when the changes start to look at all levels, I will understand that what initially makes me fall in love to practice is my thirst for beauty, symmetry, proportion and peace.

Of course in all kinds of yoga these are always the goals, but with the practice of Ashtanga, I have the most powerful technology in my hands, to achieve it.

Whatever the physical condition, regardless of background age-knowledge, the alchemical power of fire, will help me move on.

Let's better start with the fact that any kind of yoga practice I do, it's better than not doing it at all. So the question does not initially arise in which school you choose but to begin!

For a school of Ashtanga Vinyasa, the lineage (the order of succession of teachers ) is very important. This is the golden chain that connects me with the practice and its authenticity. Therefore it is important for me to know who is my teacher, and his apprenticeship, and if he practices in everyday life what he stands for.

In our Shala, teachers that “give” the practice of Ashtanga are trained and accredited by Pattabhi Jois (Christina Karytinos), Manju Jois (Maria Mytilinaiou), have deep experience and are associated with the tradition. They keep their practices and continue on the path of their life n direct relation with this.

Are there any levels?

Yes there are. However, it is a fact that even for beginners it is best to start by self practice, if they wish, and the teacher gives permission.

Ashtanga Intro: This class provides an introduction to the basics of Ashtanga yoga, the science system of postures, connecting breath with movement. The course aims to give the student all the information he initially feels that are needed to solve any questions or to give certain variations where necessary, to proceed with confidence in Mysore self practice, to gradually build strength, flexibility and understand the importance of respiration and breathing and concentration. The course is completed in five two-day workshops, and the dates are communicated by the faculty at regular intervals. Addressed to new students of the school and a past students who want to deepen, and at some point those who want to follow the path of the Teacher.

Ashtanga Prep II: A class above the basic level, this course focuses more on traditional techniques (jump backs, jump throughs, chakrasana vinyasa). The term Hatha yoga is a general description used to describe several forms of practice
In fact there are many types of yoga that do not include physical exercise.
Karma Yoga (selfless service to others).
Bhakti Yoga (the practice of devotion and worship).
Jnana Yoga (practice of insight and meditation).
However, when most think of the word yoga, are usually referred to Hatha Yoga, and they think is only physical practice.

Hatha Yoga is usually translated as yoga of the forces (sun-moon-Ha-tha).

It gives the experience in handling the physical energies within the body by watching their contradictions.

The main goal in Hatha yoga is usually enable and purify the natural flows in the body (nadis) and to create a balance between the two main channels (ida, pingala).

The central energy channel (shushumna nadi), which relates the experiences of insight and wake begins to roll, as soon as the physical flow and balance is restored.
While the traditional goal of Hatha yoga is therefore the spiritual awakening (liberation from duality), many people practice this form of yoga for health benefits, which are many !!!...

The exact origins of Hatha yoga are not clear ...

But many of the practices have been around for thousands of years.
We can discover the spirit of Hatha yoga in basic Indian texts such as the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and later Hatha Yoga Prantipika.
One of the most famous texts often used in philosophical and practical validation in the modern practice of yoga, is the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Today the term Hatha yoga is often used as a generic term to describe a category of practice based on asana (posture) and pranayama (breathing principles).
Several courses in our school could be considered as Hatha yoga, including courses for childbirth or Rehabilitation, in that sense, because they offer a wide range of stretch, balance and breathing techniques.

Chandra Moon

It is tradition in Ashtanga, on dates of full moon and new moon not to practice.

The days preceding the full moon cause an increase of body fluids, like internal tide and in general, an increase in energy. This leads to over-stimulation, so intense practice is not appropriate on the day of the full moon, as this power is the highest peak.

The opposite happens in the dates of the new moon where body fluids are reduced and the joints become stiff and dry. Energy is reduced, risking injury to an intense practice, on the day of the full moon.

On these days, and for those who do not wish to stop the practice, the Chandra-Moon series is generally reachable by most practitioners of yoga. If you have difficulties with the first series or experiencing an injury, this series is a wonderful alternative to your practice. The basic principles of vinyasa, streaming and conscious breathing are observed.

 

MOON DAYS

The school is open on the days of the Full Moon and New Moon.
Traditionally we don’t do Mysore practice on these days.

But except for Mysore classes that practice meditation (chanting) there are other classes that you can take.
